Shubman Gill Scolds Yashasvi Jaiswal

Young Indian top-order batters Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal had a brief mix-up during their partnership in the second innings of the day-night Test against Australia. Yashasvi Jaiswal hesitated on a single while Shubman Gill called for a quick single off Australian skipper Pat Cummins’ bowling on Day 2.

Australia took a crucial 157-run first-innings lead against India at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide on Saturday, December 7. Middle-order batter Travis Head scored an explosive century, while Marnus Labuschagne smashed a half-century. Head scored 140 runs off 141 balls, including 17 boundaries and 4 sixes.

“Main Tujhe Sahi Call Hi Dunga” – Shubman Gill to Yashasvi Jaiswal

In response, India lost KL Rahul early before Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal attempted to stabilize the innings under the floodlights. A brief mix-up between the two batters while running between the wickets caused momentary tension but was resolved with a quick discussion during the third session.

On the first ball of the sixth over, Pat Cummins bowled a fuller delivery on the leg stump, and Gill called for a run after flicking it to square leg. However, Jaiswal hesitated, shouting “no” after leaving the crease. The confusion left both young Indian batters stranded mid-pitch before they completed the run.

After the close call, Gill advised Jaiswal in Hindi to trust his judgment for running when the ball is in the gap. Their conversation was caught on the stump mic, and the clip garnered interest from fans on social media.

“Aisa mat kar tu, main tujhe sahi call hi duga.” (Don’t do this. I will give you right calls for a run),” Shubman Gill said.

However, the young batters failed to make the most of their starts in the second innings. Jaiswal scored 24 runs before being dismissed by Scott Boland. Gill was dismissed by Mitchell Starc after adding 28 runs to his tally.

Their Intent Was Really Good – Cheteshwar Pujara

India faced challenges on Day 1 of the Adelaide Test, but Cheteshwar Pujara was impressed with KL Rahul and Shubman Gill’s positive intent. He noted their approach forced Australian bowlers to alter their lengths. However, he pointed out that most of the dismissals came from misjudging bouncing deliveries.

“Their intent was really good. They were quite positive. They forced the bowlers to move their length because they were pitching it up. They played really well, but they forced the Aussie bowlers to go back off length and that’s where I think we didn’t tackle that well.

Most of the dismissals from our top order, apart from Yashasvi, KL got out to a ball which was rising a bit, and Virat got out to a ball that was back of length. He wasn’t decisive whether to play or leave that ball, and Gil got out to a fuller ball,” Pujara told ESPNCricinfo.
