Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla is the latest player to back the Indian captain Rohit Sharma to come out of his recent slump in form. Chawla claimed that a player like Rohit cannot be kept silent for a long time.

Chawla also felt that Rohit’s captaincy will see a positive change once he starts scoring runs. He backed the Indian skipper to get out of bad form soon in the ongoing Test series against Australia.

Rohit Sharma’s form has been a serious concern for India over the past few months. He has been in poor batting form since the start of the home Test season against Bangladesh. Being the captain of the team, Rohit will be looking to score in the remaining Test matches.

Piyush Chawla backs Rohit Sharma to regain form soon

During a conversation on Star Sports, Piyush Chawla was asked about Rohit Sharma’s batting and captaincy. Chawla accepted the fact that Rohit is going through poor form but backed him to score runs soon. He even claimed that if he score runs, his captaincy decisions will also improve.

“Rohit Sharma is going through lack of form currently. He hasn’t scored many runs in Test cricket for some time now. A player of his calibre cannot be kept silent for a long time. When he will score runs, it will have a positive impact on his captaincy as well,” Chawla reckoned.

While Rohit Sharma is not scoring many runs, his captaincy has also been under the scanner. Some of his decisions have been severely criticized by the experts and former cricketers. However, Chawla feels that Rohit is a great thinker and will return to form soon.

“In terms of captaincy, he is a great thinker. We have seen it in the T20 World Cup (2024) and even in the previous Test series. Every player has such kind of one-odd Test matches or series in his career. However, he won’t take much time to get out of this form slump,” he added.

Rohit Sharma’s poor form continues

Rohit Sharma missed the first Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Perth due to the birth of his second child. In his absence, India’s vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah led the team. Under Bumrah, India registered a famous win on a bouncy Perth wicket by 295 runs.

Rohit Sharma played the pink ball warm-up game against the Prime Minister’s XI and also the second Test in Adelaide. However, he failed to register a significant score in any of the innings.

The right-hander left his opening spot to allow the pair of Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul to flourish at the top of the order. However, the move didn’t work as all three players had poor outings. Rohit scored 3 and 6 across both the innings and clearly lacked confidence.
