Former India National Cricket Team player Manoj Tiwary made a massive claim about Rohit Sharma’s decision to drop himself for the last game of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. He said that it was a call of the captain as Gautam Gambhir would never be able to drop the skipper or Virat Kohli.

Rohit Sharma made a massive decision ahead of the last Test against the Australia National Cricket Team. The India National Cricket Team skipper dropped himself from the playing XI as he was consistently failing to score runs for the team both in the middle order and at the top.

Rohit Sharma played three games in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25

Rohit played three games in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 and slammed just 31 runs at an average of around 6. This in itself reflects the kind of poor form that he had endured. Even before the Australia series, he looked torrid with the bat in the home Test season.

When Rohit didn’t feature in the Sydney Test, there were reports that the decision was taken by Gautam Gambhir. But later, the captain, in a candid chat with Star Sports, revealed that he decided to drop himself as he didn’t want too many out-of-form batters.

I don’t think Gautam Gambhir will be able to drop Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma – Manoj Tiwary

Manoj Tiwary also believes that Rohit decided to drop himself and not Gautam Gambhir. He added that the captain should’ve played the game as not many players were scoring runs and added that the captain doubted his abilities. Speaking to Hindustan Times, he said:

“I think Rohit Sharma took the decision. It was his own decision. I don’t think Gautam Gambhir will be able to drop Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma. I think it was Rohit’s decision. Rohit should have played in Sydney because he was the captain.

“He said he wasn’t scoring runs, so obviously, he wasn’t scoring runs, but others weren’t also doing so. Sometimes, you go to that mindset where you feel you must be dropped rather than someone else. You are just doubting your abilities and putting others’ abilities above you.”

As a captain, you cannot drop himself when the Test series is on the line – Manoj Tiwary

Manoj Tiwary added that Rohit shouldn’t have taken that decision as every player goes through a rough patch. He said that although the batter took the decision for the sake of the team, he shouldn’t have dropped himself when the Test series was on the line. He added:

“This should not be done by a captain. I think Rohit Sharma is a tremendous talent. He has proven himself. Batters and bowlers, everyone goes through a rough patch. Even coaches also.

“These things can be rectified, and you can return and score runs. I personally felt he shouldn’t have dropped himself. It looks like he did that for the sake of the team. As a captain, you cannot drop himself when the Test series is on the line.”
