India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is all set to appear for Mumbai in the match against Jammu & Kashmir in the second leg of Ranji Trophy 2024-25. The match will be played at Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy BKC, Mumbai from January 23
Jaiswal was recently not named in India’s T20I squad for the five-match T20I series against England with the selectors opting to give him ‘rest’ after the hectic Test series against Australia.
However, the youngster has instead opted to play Ranji Trophy which is a big boost or the defending champions. Mumbai are currently third in Group A with three wins, 1 defeat, and 1 draw in five matches so far.
Yashasvi Jaiswal to play Ranji Trophy for Mumbai
A source in the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) confirmed Yashasvi Jaiswal’s availability for the next Ranji Trophy match against Jammu & Kashmir. The squad is yet to be picked by the chairman selectors Sanjay Patil and will be announced soon.
“He (Yashasvi Jaiswal) has been asked to report for Mumbai practice from tomorrow. He is available for the match on January 23, and he will be picked for that game, the source was quoted as saying by TOI.
With the teenager Ayush Mhatre in great form with the bat, Mumbai will have a solid opening combination. Angkrish Raghuvanshi seems to be making way for Jaiswal from their last Ranji game after Prithvi Shaw was dropped earlier from the squad.
Yashasvi Jaiswal in BGT 2024-25
Yashasvi Jaiswal had a good tour of Australia, although he was unable to take India across the line. Jaiswal played all five Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and emerged as India’s highest run-getter of the series.
In five Tests, Jaiswal scored 391 runs at an average of 43.44 with one hundred and two fifties. He was also the highest run-scorer of the series behind Travis Head. The 23-year-old played a key role in India’s win at Perth with a superb hundred in the second innings.
Yashasvi Jaiswal has had a fantastic start to his Test career. He has scored 1798 runs in 19 Tests at an average of 52.88 with 4 hundreds and 10 fifties to his name already. At a young age, he has been India’s best batter in the red-ball format since his debut.
He is in line to be selected in India’s squad for the Champions Trophy 2025 despite not playing an ODI so far. He could be selected as India’s third opener behind the captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill.
Rohit Sharma practices with Mumbai
Meanwhile, India’s captain Rohit Sharma practised for almost 45 minutes with the Mumbai Ranji team. Rohit participated in a few throwdowns and even took part in the match simulation where he faced Mumbai’s top bowlers.
However, Rohit has not confirmed his participation in the Ranji Trophy game against Jammu & Kashmir as he is still unsure about it. Rohit will play in the upcoming Champions Trophy and doesn’t want to get used to red-ball cricket.
In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Rohit scored just 31 runs in three Tests at an average of 6.20. The Indian captain even dropped himself from the last Test in Sydney due to his poor form with the bat.
