Sydney Thunder all-rounder Daniel Sams has been ruled out for the remainder of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 season following a horror concussion. Daniel Sams sustained a concussion from a collision with teammate Cameron Bancroft while attempting a catch against Perth Scorchers on January 3.

The allrounder was hospitalized earlier this month after a mid-game collision with teammate Cameron Bancroft, who sustained a season-ending broken nose and fractured shoulder blade. Sams started a mandatory 12-day concussion stand-down period, during which he flew back to Sydney from Perth.

Daniel Sams Cleared Concussion Protocols This Week

The 32-year-old cricketer cleared concussion protocols this week and was fit to play in Sydney Thunder’s final regular-season match against the Sydney Sixers on Friday. However, a side injury became evident during his concussion recovery.

Sams had briefly left the field with side pain before the concussion incident but returned to play. After further medical assessment, it was confirmed that Sams has a season-ending side strain, ruling him out for the remainder of the tournament.

Thunder General Manager Trent Copeland acknowledged Daniel Sams’ resilience. Copeland emphasized Sams’ invaluable contributions on and off the field but noted that his health must take priority. He stated that Sams would remain an integral part of the team, even though he wouldn’t be playing on the field.

“Daniel has demonstrated incredible resilience over the past week, and it’s unfortunate to lose him for the remainder of the season. His contributions on and off the field have been invaluable, but his health and recovery must come first. The entire team is behind him, and we’ll be supporting him every step of the way,” said Trent Copeland.
