Former Indian cricketer Vinod Kambli recently faced a serious health challenge, being admitted to Akruti Health City Hospital in Thane due to a high-grade fever. The cricketing legend’s condition had fans and the cricket fraternity concerned. However, after receiving medical care, Kambli was discharged and began his recovery journey.

Despite his improved condition, he appeared visibly weak and had difficulty walking at the 50th anniversary celebration of Mumbai’s iconic Wankhede Stadium.

Wankhede Stadium has been a historic venue for cricketing greats, from Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar to modern stars like Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane. For Kambli, this ground holds a special place in his heart. The stadium witnessed many of his cricketing achievements and milestones. At the celebration, organized by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), Kambli was honoured for his contributions to the sport.

During the event, Kambli made a poignant gesture by walking towards Gavaskar, one of his cricketing idols, to touch his feet as a mark of respect. The moment underscored his deep admiration for Gavaskar but also highlighted Kambli’s physical struggles, as he visibly struggled to walk. Despite this, fans and fellow cricketers were relieved to see him on the path to recovery.

Kambli’s advice to aspiring cricketers

Reflecting on his cherished memories at Wankhede Stadium, Kambli recalled scoring his first double hundred against England at this venue, which marked the beginning of many more hundreds in his career. “I remember I smashed my first double hundred here against England and then went on to score many more hundreds in my career,” he said.

Kambli advised aspiring cricketers to work hard consistently, as he and Tendulkar did since childhood, to achieve their dreams of playing for India. “If anyone wants to play for India like me or Sachin, then I would advise that you should keep working hard and never leave doing that because that’s what Sachin and me did since our childhood days,” former batter said on the occasion.
