Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Usman Khawaja

The entertainment in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 between Australia and India continues on Day 1 of the last Test match in the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). This is evident with the dismissal of Australian batter Usman Khawaja as Jasprit Bumrah celebrated the wicket in an emphatic manner which lifted the spirits of the team up after a horror-show with the bat.

Jasprit Bumrah hailed Usman Khawaja’s dismissal as first day’s play comes to an end

Australia came to bat in their first innings after India were bowled out for 185 runs in 72.2 overs. The Aussies had a dream start to the innings after youngster Sam Konstas stepped out of the crease and smashed a boundary in Bumrah’s first over trying to assert his dominance over the Indian skipper. However, the 31-year-old had a plan of his own to destabilize the Australian openers.

Bumrah was determined to bowl the final over of the day amidst interruptions from Konstas who got involved in a heated exchange with the Indian captain and Khawaja who was seemingly delaying the day’s proceedings deliberately. But their plots bore no fruit as Bumrah, on the final ball of the day, got rid of the experienced Khawaja who got out as the ball took an edge off his bat, giving an easy catch to KL Rahul in the slips. Following Khawaja’s dismissal,  Bumrah instead of celebrating wicket with his teammates returned back to the non-strikers and gave a stare to Konstas in a show of strength.

A disappointing performance from India with the bat

Meanwhile, it was a day to forget for Indian batters as they submitted to the Australian pace attack on a lush green Sydney pitch. The entire Indian top order including the in-form Yashasvi Jaiswal gave their wickets away cheaply. Virat Kohli, whose innings got a lease of life in the beginning also failed to leave a mark once again and got dismissed on an outside off-stump ball.

Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja tried to offer some resistance to the Aussies but Pant threw his wicket once again while attempting an irresponsible shot. The hero of Melbourne Nitish Kumar Reddy was also sent back to the pavilion on a golden duck. A captain’s knock from Bumrah towards the end made it possible for the Indian team to reach the 185-run mark. Aussies, in response, have made 9 runs at the end of day’s play for the loss of 1 wicket, trailing behind by 176 runs.
