Australia allrounder Marcus Stoinis is set to become the new captain of Melbourne Stars from the upcoming season of the Big Bash League. Stoinis will replace Glenn Maxwell, who stepped down from the role after the end of last season.
Maxwell was the Stars’ captain since 2018. But he decided to resign from the role after Stars failed to make it to the finals for the fourth successive year. Melbourne Stars is one of the two teams in the history of the BBL not to have won a title so far apart from Hobart Hurricanes.
In January after the end of the season, Glenn Maxwell informed his teammates about his decision to step down from the captaincy. However, he still wishes to be an integral part of the set-up and wants to achieve great things for the franchise.

After Maxwell stepped down at the end of last season, Marcus Stoinis emerged as the frontrunner to take over. He has earlier led Melbourne Stars when Maxwell was out of the team due to injury.
Marcus Stoinis on Melbourne Stars captaincy
Stoinis has also shown interest in leading the team before. He has already revealed that he is loyal to the team and wants to win trophies with them in the future.
“I would love to do it, I love the Stars. I’ve been there for what feels like forever and I’ve got no plans of going anywhere, that’s a team I want to create some success with,” Stoinis had said before their T20 World Cup Super 8 match against Bangladesh.
Stoinis reckons that it will create another interesting challenge in his Big Bash resume. He also feels happy to have signed with Melbourne Stars for the next three years.
“It would create another fun, interesting challenge to add to the Big Bash. I’m just also glad that I’ve committed for the next three years and I can start planning being around Melbourne during the Christmas and New Year’s period,” Stoinis added.
Glenn Maxwell’s BBL record as captain
Maxwell ends his captaincy tenure in Big Bash with a win-loss ratio of 35:31. He will continue to be a crucial part of Melbourne Stars and will provide much-needed assistance to Marcus Stoinis.
Both Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell are established T20 players in international cricket. Both were part of Australia’s T20 World Cup title win in 2021. Both are devastating players and have the ability to win the matches on their own.
