During the second ODI at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack against England, India‘s Shubman Gill pulled off a remarkable backward-running catch to dismiss Harry Brook. The England batter had been anchoring the innings, but Harshit Rana’s clever change of pace forced an error, and Gill’s outstanding athleticism ensured the breakthrough.

On the fourth ball of the 30th over, Rana deceived Harry Brook with a well-disguised off-cutter, inducing a mistimed shot. Brook, who had been comfortable against pace-on deliveries, preemptively moved leg-side, expecting another quick ball. However, the change of pace caught him off guard, leading to an off-balance stroke. The ball lobbed towards mid-off, but it still required exceptional fielding to complete the dismissal.

Gill sprinted backward at full speed, keeping his eyes locked on the descending ball. Despite the difficulty of looking over his shoulder while running, he judged the trajectory perfectly. His footwork was precise, allowing him to cover significant ground without losing control. As the ball dipped, he extended his hands and completed the catch just before it could evade him. The athleticism and commitment showcased by Gill highlighted his sharp fielding instincts. His effort turned what seemed like a half-chance into a moment of brilliance. The timing of the wicket was crucial, breaking England’s growing partnership at a key juncture. Brook’s departure for 31 off 52 balls tilted the momentum in India’s favour.
