Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been honoured with the prestigious ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year 2024 award, as announced by the apex cricketing body on Monday, January 27. This recognition comes after a stellar year in which Bumrah showcased his exceptional talent and consistency on the international stage.
“Bumrah was the standout bowler in the world in 2024, excelling in both home and away conditions and proving a key contributor in keeping India in contention in the ICC World Test Championship standings,” the ICC stated in a press release.
Outstanding performance with the ball
Bumrah continued to demonstrate his prowess in Test cricket throughout 2024, solidifying his position as one of the world’s premier fast bowlers. Across a gruelling calendar year, Bumrah featured in 13 Tests, delivering consistently impactful performances, especially in challenging conditions.
Bumrah’s extraordinary performance came in South Africa and Australia, where his pace and precision dismantled strong batting line-ups. Against South Africa in Cape Town, the right-arm seamer recorded figures of 2/6 and 6/24, leading India to a comprehensive victory. In Australia, he showcased his brilliance, particularly in Brisbane, where he claimed 6/42 in the first innings and added 3 more in the second.
Finishing with 71 wickets in 13 Test matches
In home conditions, Bumrah proved effective as well. Against England in Hyderabad, he took 6 wickets in the match, helping India to a dominant win. His performances against Bangladesh and New Zealand demonstrated his ability to adapt to different pitches, contributing significantly with both the new ball and in the later stages of innings.
