Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will enter the 2025 IPL mega auction with a Rs 55 crore purse and one Right-to-Match card after retaining their core players, including new captain Ruturaj Gaikwad.
The five-time IPL champions retained Gaikwad (Rs 18 crore), Ravindra Jadeja (Rs 18 crore), Matheesha Pathirana (Rs 13 crore), Shivam Dube (Rs 12 crore), and MS Dhoni (Rs 4 crore).
MS Dhoni retained as an uncapped player by CSK
Dhoni’s retention came at a lower price thanks to a revived rule classifying players without international appearances in five years as uncapped.
5 time champions are likely to target spin-bowling all-rounders, a strategy that has previously brought them success at their spin-friendly home ground, Chepauk. Top targets likely include Glenn Maxwell and Liam Livingstone who both offer off-spin options alongside aggressive batting.
Former Super Kings opener Devon Conway who led the team’s batting in their 2023 title victory will remain a priority. The New Zealand left-hander’s potential return could be secured through their RTM card, though young Kiwi all-rounder Rachin Ravindra presents another compelling RTM option after his strong start to IPL 2024.
Chennai needs to fill 20 player slots, including seven overseas positions. Their shopping list includes a top-order batter who can bowl spin, Indian pace bowlers, and a foreign opener.
Chennai’s auction strategy
CSK’s auction strategy will historically successful approach of targeting players who either have experience working with their think-tank or fill specific roles. The team has consistently built competitive squads despite budget constraints winning titles in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023.
The Rs 55 crore budget, however, may force CSK to be selective in bidding wars, particularly for marquee Indian players like Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul, who are expected to command demand.
The auction represents CSK’s first major roster rebuild since Gaikwad took over captaincy from Dhoni while maintaining their core philosophy of balanced team composition.
