Punjab Kings entered the IPL 2025 auction at a critical juncture and are armed with the league’s largest purse of INR 110.5 crores and a mandate for complete reconstruction after a disappointing 2024 season.
The franchise retained just two uncapped players – Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh and is out on a comprehensive reset under new head coach Ricky Ponting.
The 2024 season exposed plenty of vulnerabilities for PBKS, from the fourth-worst powerplay batting average at 51 to losing 23 wickets in the first six overs and middle-order performances and challenges, hence which will require a multi-dimensional approach to team building with leadership, batting depth, and bowling consistency.
An appointment that does have a renewal in it, with the team now targeting experienced leaders such as Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant, who could change the face of the side for on-field dynamics.
Quite clearly, the auction seems to be targeted at top-order reinforcement that would include explosive players like Devon Conway and complement the bowling attack of accomplished performers like Yuzvendra Chahal and Arshdeep Singh.
The Right-to-Match (RTM) strategy looked particularly interesting, with the Punjab franchise likely to re-acquire key players like Arshdeep Singh who has established himself as one of India’s premier T20 bowlers, and all-rounder Liam Livingstone, known for his match-winning capabilities it’s a potential turning point for a franchise that has repeatedly fallen short of its potential.
