Gautam Gambhir under pressure

Gautam Gambhir is under some pressure coming into this series. There have been questions on some of his decisions which have not gone down well with former cricketers.

Even in the current Test at Perth, India played Washington Sundar ahead of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. The decision to play the inexperienced Sundar ahead of the highly experienced veterans came as a huge shock and Gautam Gambhir was blasted for his decision.

Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin are the top two Test allrounders in the world. Dropping both of them for Sundar together was a hugs surprise for everyone.

With Gambhir as head coach, India have already lost an ODI to Sri Lanka and were blanked 0-3 by New Zealand in the recent Test series at home. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is a big test for the former India cricketer in his new role.

India fight back through Jasprit Bumrah

Earlier, India had won the toss and elected to bat first on tough batting conditions. Australian fast bowlers made full use of good fast bowling conditions as the pitch offered plenty of assistance.

Nitish Kumar Reddy top-scored for India with a well-made 41 while Rishabh Pant scored a valuable 37. Josh Hazlewood was the pick of the bowlers for Australia with 4-29 while Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Mitchell Marsh picked up two wickets each as Australia reduced India to 150.

In reply, Indian bowlers brought their team back into the game with some fine fast bowling. Skipper Jasprit Bumrah led the way with a magnificent five-wicket haul while Mohammed Siraj and Harshit Rana gave him good company.

Harshit Rana picked up a three-wicket haul in his debut Test innings while Mohammed Siraj finished with two wickets. India did not require Washington Sundar to bowl as much and bundled out Australia for just 104 in their first innings, thus securing a lead of 46 runs. India started well in their second innings and look good for a big score on the board.
