Sunil Gavaskar has batted for the India captain Rohit Sharma to take the opening spot back in the remainder of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. He believes that KL Rahul should be back in the middle order, as he was originally slated to bat in the middle.
India National Cricket Team have been making changes to their batting order in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Since Rohit Sharma missed the first game of the series, KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal opened the innings for the team in Perth.
KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal put on a historic partnership in Perth
The move paid off terrifically well as KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal put on a historic partnership and helped India National Cricket Team win the game. The duo put on a double-century stand, which was the highest by an Indian pair in Australia, and put the opposition under pressure.
Rohit was back for India in the second game but they didn’t change the opening stand. Captain mentioned that it was a difficult decision for him personally, but for the team, it was the right call as he praised KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal for their staggering partnership.

Rohit, however, failed to make an impact in the middle order in the Adelaide Test. Not only him but KL Rahul, at the top, too, didn’t score runs in the pink-ball Test, and it has once again raised talks related to the opening spot for the team in the series.
Many fans and experts have rooted for Rohit Sharma to come back at the top. The latest to join the bandwagon is Sunil Gavaskar. The batting great cited that KL Rahul opened in the absence of the captain; otherwise, he was supposed to bat in the middle order. Speaking to Sports Tak, he explained:
“Yes, I think he should come on his regular number. We should also keep in mind that why did Rahul open? Because Rohit Sharma was not available for the first Test. Now he was kept as an opener for the second Test because of his partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal, I can understand that.
Rohit Sharma should go on his regular number in the opening – Sunil Gavaskar
Sunil Gavaskar further added that neither Rohit nor KL Rahul scored runs in the second innings, and hence, the captain should be back at the top. He added that if the senior batter gets started, he will go on to get a big ton. He explained:
“But he did not make runs in this Test match. So I think Rahul should go on his regular number 5 or 6. And Rohit Sharma should go on his regular number at top. If Rohit Sharma makes 30 runs in the third Test, he can convert it into a big century.” he concluded.
