Ben McDermott’s Screamer Dismisses Moises Henriques for 1 Run

The Hobart Hurricanes made a strong start with the ball in the Qualifier match in the BBL 2024-25. Riley Meredith wreaked havoc bowling at over 150 km/h and reduced the Sixers to 5/3 after just three overs. The third wicket was Moises Henriques, and the credit goes to an exceptional catch.

On the second ball of the third over of the Sydney Sixers’ innings, Meredith bowled a 149 kph length ball outside off, and Henriques attempted to hit but only managed to edge it. Ben McDermott, who was positioned at wide slip, reacted quickly and dove to his left to take a spectacular catch.

Henriques was dismissed for 1 from 5 balls. The commentators and fielders were stunned after the catch was taken in the slips.

He Caught That Like He Didn’t Have Gloves On – Mark Waugh

The Big Bash League’s official account on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) shared a clip of McDermott’s exceptional fielding efforts with the caption, “CATCH! That’s a ripper at slip from Ben McDermott 😲 #BBL14.”

“Benny McDermott takes a genuine hanger at first, what a catch that is. The Sixers are being absolutely torn apart,” Mark Howard said.

While Mark Waugh added: “That is a super catch, normally got the gloves on McDermott, but he caught that like he did have gloves on… that’s a big wicket.”

We’ve Seen the Quickest Ball of the Summer – Adam Gilchrist

Meredith reached a milestone of 100 wickets in the Big Bash League during his 77th game, becoming the first-ever player from the Hobart Hurricanes to achieve this feat. Jordan Silk faced a sharp bouncer from Meredith on the first ball, narrowly ducking under it as Matthew Wade jumped to catch the ball.

“I’d go as far as saying we’ve seen the quickest ball of the summer, in any format,” Adam Gilchrist said.

“Benny McDermott takes a hanger, that was 148 k’s an hour, the first ball to Jordan (Silk) really shortened him up.

“And then the fourth ball, 152.1 k’s per hour, and just for a moment we thought there was another catching opportunity in the slips.”

Meanwhile, Waugh said: “I’d say that speed was right, because that edge of that ball, 152, carried past the circle and it was just a push. It doesn’t go that far unless it was coming down like a rocket.

“You cannot beat raw pace, it doesn’t matter, raw pace worries everybody.”
