Ben McDermott's remarkable one-hand catch

In the 7th match of the Big Bash League 2024-25, at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart, the Hobart Hurricanes took on the Perth Scorchers, with the fans witnessing a sensational one-handed catch from Hobart’s wicket-keeper batter, Ben McDermott. The stunning grab came off the bowling of Riley Meredith, dismissing Perth’s opener, Finn Allen, in a dramatic turn of events.

Ben McDermott’s remarkable one-hand catch

The match began with a fiery start from Perth Scorchers’ opener, Allen, who opened the innings with a boundary off the very first ball. Meredith bowled a back-of-a-length delivery that wobbled away outside off, and Allen expertly punched it to the left of mid-off, sending the ball racing to the boundary. The crowd roared as Allen got off to a strong start, but the very next delivery turned the tide in Hobart’s favor.

Meredith’s following ball to Allen was a length delivery that nipped in after pitching, catching the inside edge of Allen’s bat. The ball veered away from his body, and in a split second, McDermott, positioned behind the stumps, dived superbly to his left to take a one-handed catch. Allen was dismissed for 4 runs off just 2 balls.

Riley Meredith’s brilliant performance with the ball

Meredith was the standout performer for the Hobart Hurricanes in the first innings. The right-arm fast bowler’s exceptional spell of 3 wickets for 25 runs in 4 overs played a pivotal role in keeping the Scorchers’ batting under control. Following the early wicket of Allen, Meredith dismissed two more key players from Perth. First, he got rid of Cooper Connolly, who was caught behind by McDermott, and then he dismissed Perth’s captain, Ashton Turner, in a crucial breakthrough. Meredith’s accuracy and ability to strike at crucial moments ensured the Scorchers could not build any significant partnerships. His remarkable performance didn’t stop there, Meredith also displayed brilliant fielding, executing a direct hit to run out wicket-keeper batter Josh Inglis, further tightening Hobart’s grip on the game.
