The futures of Indian cricket team superstars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are hanging by a thread as the prestigious ICC Champions Trophy 2025 looms. Both players endured a horrific time in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, with Kohli’s century being the only highlight, while Rohit failed to get the momentum throughout the Test series.

It is being said that the Indian selection committee and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have not yet made any immediate decision on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s future despite their disastrous performances in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, which Australia clinched after more than a decade with a 3-1 scoreline.

If Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma fail to deliver in the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may have no choice but to make a tough call, potentially bringing an end to their glittering careers with the prestigious tournament, starting on February 19 with India playing their matches in Dubai.

On Saturday, January 11, a high-stakes meeting was held in Mumbai, chaired by BCCI President Roger Binny, to review India’s disappointing Test series loss to Australia. The two-hour session involved key figures, including captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and some other senior Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials.

As of now, nothing will happen: Source on Virat and Rohit’s future

However, despite all these disappointments, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will not make any immediate changes, but the management is considering captaincy changes after the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) wants Virat Kohli to score more runs, but neither he nor Rohit Sharma will be dropped from the Test team for now. However, their future depends on their performance in the Champions Trophy.

The source further noted, “As of now, nothing will happen, but the management is considering captaincy changes going forward after the Champions Trophy. If things do not change, steps may be taken regarding captaincy. As far as Virat is concerned, he also needs to show some runs, but I don’t see either of them being removed from the Test team as we speak. Everything depends on their performance in the Champions Trophy.”

The Indian cricket team management is not happy with players picking and choosing which bilateral series and domestic tournaments to play in. A source revealed that both the players and selectors have been clearly told that they can’t make such decisions from now on. He signed off by saying, “Players will not be allowed to pick and choose. This has been strictly communicated to both the players and selectors.”
