Indian National Cricket Team have suffered a major blow ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. As per the reports in Indian Express, it is learned that premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is all set to miss the league stage of the tournament due to back swelling.
Jasprit Bumrah will now be heading to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, where he will be monitored and will begin his recovery. It has been learned that the National selectors have got a clear picture of the fast bowler and are now under discussions related to his place in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
It has been learned that the selectors are discussing whether they should name Jasprit in the squad of 15 or add him to the list of reserve players for the tournament. The BCCI will be naming the provisional squad soon and will have time till February 12. This will allow them to monitor Bumrah’s fitness closely.
NCA will monitor his recovery, and he will be there for three weeks – Source on Jasprit Bumrah
A source close to the developments said that Jasprit Bumrah will be fit by the start of March. While confirming that the fast bowler has back swelling, he said that the pacer will also be playing practice games before making a comeback. Speaking to Indian Express, he said:
“He (Bumrah) will be going to NCA for his rehabilitation. The initial report says he doesn’t have a fracture but has swelling on his back. So, the NCA will monitor his recovery, and he will be there for three weeks. But even after that, he will have to play a match or two, even if they are practice games organised to check his match fitness,” said the source.
Jasprit Bumrah will be missing the league games in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025
This means that Bumrah will be missing the league stage games of the India National Cricket Team in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The Rohit Sharma-led side will be playing their last match against New Zealand on 2nd March, and it is unclear if he will be featuring in that or not.
Bumrah suffered a back injury during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. He experienced trouble in his back during the last Test, where he bowled just 10 overs in the first innings and then was taken off the field. He didn’t return to bowl in the second innings.
Jasprit Bumrah bowled over 150 overs in the five games in Australia
The reason behind him getting injured was potentially his workload. The premier India carried the bowling lineup for the team single-handedly and bowled over 150 overs in the five games. He was the leading wicket-taker in the series as well with 32 wickets to his name.
The Indian Team management would be hoping that Jasprit Bumrah regains his full fitness and play some part in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Even if he will be available for the knockouts, it will be a massive boost for the India National Cricket Team.
