Chennai Super Kings (CSK), with a purse of Rs 55 crore and one Right-to-Match card for the 2025 IPL mega auction, will enter the season with core players intact including the new captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad.
The five-time IPL champions retained Gaikwad (Rs 18 crore), Ravindra Jadeja (Rs 18 crore), Matheesha Pathirana (Rs 13 crore), Shivam Dube (Rs 12 crore), and MS Dhoni (Rs 4 crore).
Significantly, Dhoni’s retention was done at a lower price since the rule classifying any player without international appearances in five years as uncapped has gained revival.
Industry sources suggest Super Kings will target spin-bowling all-rounders, a strategy that has previously brought them success at their spin-friendly home ground, Chepauk.
Top targets likely include Glenn Maxwell and Liam Livingstone, who both offer off-spin options alongside aggressive batting.
Former CSK opener Devon Conway, who led the team’s batting in their 2023 title victory, remains a priority.
The New Zealand left-hander’s potential return could be secured through their RTM card, though young Kiwi all-rounder Rachin Ravindra presents another compelling RTM option after his strong start to IPL 2024 (222 runs, strike rate of 160.87).
The franchise has 20 slots to be filled in, starting with seven overseas players. On their shopping list are a top-order batter capable of bowling spin, Indian pace bowlers, and a foreign opener.

It may hobble the Rs 55-crore budget to not be judicious in bidding wars, especially for marquee Indian players like Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul, who are likely to cost a bomb.
