‘Rohit Sharma’s Test career is not as glorious as Virat Kohli’s because…’ – Aakash Chopra drops bombshell

Former India National Cricket Team player Aakash Chopra was critical of Rohit Sharma’s Test career after the poor form in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. He compared his career to Virat Kohli’s, saying that it is not as glorious as the latter.

Rohit Sharma has been under the massive scanner after he failed terribly in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. The India captain was expected to have a great series, especially after the lean patch in the home Test season. But things got even worse for him.

Rohit Sharma failed in Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25

Rohit missed the first Test of the series due to the birth of his child and, after that, came back into the team in the second game. But with KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal doing a great job in Perth, the skipper decided to bat in the middle order for two games.

However, Rohit failed in both games in the middle order as he looked extremely low on confidence and went to bag low scores. Then he decided to move back to top order in the fourth Test but that too didn’t work as the same fate unfolded for him in both the innings in Melbourne.

Rohit Sharma then decided to drop himself for the Sydney Test, handing the captaincy to Jasprit Bumrah. Overall, in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, the India National Cricket Team skipper scored just 31 runs at an average of around 6. Overall, in the last 8 Tests, he has just around 150 runs, which is a big cause of concern.

On the other hand, Virat Kohli, too, struggled to get going in the Border-Gavaskar. But he hit a glorious century in the Perth, and it was only that channel outside off stump that troubled him, and rest, he looked fine with his footwork and ethics.

His Test career is not as glorious as Virat’s because Virat has played 123 Tests – Aakash Chopra on Rohit Sharma

Aakash Chopra criticized Rohit Sharma, saying that the India captain has been a bit of a late bloomer. He pointed out that even though Virat Kohli has struggled to score runs, he still averages around 47. Speaking in a video posted on his YouTube channel, he explained;

“His Test career is not as glorious as Virat’s because Virat has played 123 Tests, while Rohit has played only 67. Rohit has been a bit of a late bloomer, scoring 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57 in 116 innings. Kohli, despite a dip in recent years, still averages around 47.”

From January 2020 to the end of 2024, Rohit has played 35 matches, scoring 2,160 runs at an average of 36 – Aakash Chopra

Further drawing a comparison of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Aakash Chopra pointed out the numbers of both batters. He, however, stressed that Rohit Sharma’s six centuries have come in winning causes while Virat’s came in losing cause.

“From January 2020 to the end of 2024, Rohit has played 35 matches, scoring 2,160 runs at an average of 36, with six centuries. In comparison, Kohli played 39 matches and scored at an average of 30.72 during the same period. Rohit’s six centuries have all come in winning causes, unlike Kohli’s three,”
