Legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has been inducted as an honorary member of the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC). The Melbourne Cricket Club, which is one of Australia’s oldest sports clubs, announced that Sachin Tendulkar has accepted the club’s invitation for honorary cricket membership.

The legendary batter holds the record for the most Test runs by an Indian at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. He scored 449 runs from five Tests at an average of 44.90 and a strike rate of 58.69, including one century and three fifties. The former Indian skipper was honored with the Order of Australia in 2012.

The Melbourne Cricket Club took to its official X (formerly known as Twitter) handle to announce that Sachin Tendulkar has accepted an Honorary Cricket Membership. The club recognized his exceptional contributions to the sport with this honor.

“An icon honoured. The MCC is pleased to announce that former Indian captain Sachin Tendulkar has accepted an Honorary Cricket Membership, acknowledging his outstanding contribution to the game,” wrote the caption.

Sachin Tendulkar played 39 Tests against Australia in his career, scoring 3,630 runs. Tendulkar played 5 Tests and 7 ODIs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, amassing 449 and 190 runs, respectively.

Sachin Tendulkar’s Records and Achievements in His Illustrious Career

Sachin played 200 Tests, 463 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 1 T20I over his 24-year career. He is the all-time leading run-scorer in international cricket, holding records for the most runs in both Tests and ODIs.

Tendulkar made his Test debut for India on November 15, 1989, against Pakistan in Karachi, and his final match was against the West Indies in Mumbai on November 16, 2013. He scored 100 international centuries and added runs in 664 matches. He was part of India’s victorious 2011 ODI World Cup team.

Tendulkar received honorary life memberships from several prestigious clubs. In 2012, he was honored with life membership at the Sydney Cricket Club, and in 2014, he received the same distinction from the Yorkshire County Cricket Club. He is also a life member of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).

The MCG is Hosting the Fourth Test Between India and Australia

The MCG is currently hosting the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 between India and Australia. India collapsed following a critical run-out of Yashasvi Jaiswal on day two. Jaiswal, who had been playing fluently for his 82 runs off 118 balls, was run out after a mix-up with Virat Kohli (36).

India is still 310 runs behind Australia’s first-innings total of 474 and needs another 111 runs to avoid a follow-on. At one point, India was placed at 153/2 but lost three wickets within just four overs. The visiting team finished the day at 164/5, with Ravindra Jadeja (4) and Rishabh Pant (6) at the crease.
