Shreyas Iyer has emerged as the central talking point once again recently after Punjab Kings (PBKS) appointed him the captain of their team for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). PBKS bought the 30-year-old at a whopping INR 26.75 crore in the latest auction after his triumphant run to win the prestigious league title with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

The Preity Zinta-owned franchise now hopes that with Iyer as the captain, their side will advance in the season to clinch their maiden IPL glory.

Shreyas Iyer’s emphatic run as a skipper in IPL

Iyer has established himself as a successful IPL captain, leading in 71 matches with 40 wins, 31 losses, and a commendable winning percentage of 56.35. His leadership journey began with the Delhi Capitals, where he captained the team from 2018 to 2020, steering them to their first-ever IPL final in 2020 and achieving a win rate of 56.09% over 41 matches. In the 2022 auction, he moved to KKR and quickly made an impact, guiding the team to its third IPL title in just his third season, with a winning percentage of 56.70 across 30 matches. Remarkably, Iyer became the youngest IPL captain at 23 years and 142 days during the 2018 season. He also holds the unique distinction of being the only captain to lead two different teams -Capitals in 2020 and KKR in 2024 – to the IPL finals.
